The Scrubber: Remove Account Numbers From Bank Statements

Strategic Stewardship · Tax estimate · Part one

Scrub your files before you share them

Your bank statements carry your account numbers, your name and your address. We don't want any of that on the internet, and we don't want it on our site either. So The Scrubber is not a page you use here. It is a small file you download and run on your own computer, with your internet switched off if you like.

1. Download The Scrubber

This is a file only. It does not connect to the internet.

Download The Scrubber

This file scrubs your statements. It saves as "The Scrubber download - scrub your files here.html". This page is the only place to get it; if a copy reached you any other way, don't open it.

If your browser opens it instead of saving it, right-click the button and choose "Save link as."

2. Open it from your computer

  1. Find the file in your Downloads folder: The Scrubber download - scrub your files here.html.
  2. This file does not link to the internet. To check, turn your Wi-Fi off and you will see you can still use it. Look at the address bar: it starts with file:// and a folder on your computer, not https://. There is no website involved.

3. Scrub your files

  1. Type your name (and your spouse's or your business's) into the box at the top. Names are the one thing it cannot spot on its own, because a name looks like any other word.
  2. Drop in your CSVs and PDF statements. Account, card and routing numbers, anything remotely resembling a Social Security number, street addresses, city and ZIP lines, email addresses and phone numbers are removed automatically; the last four digits of each account are kept so you can still tell accounts apart.
  3. Click "View" on each result and read it over. Anything it missed, add to the boxes and run it again.
  4. Click "Download all scrubbed files." The scrubbed copies are named with "scrubbed" added. Keep the originals somewhere safe or delete them. In the next step on the tax estimate page you attach only the scrubbed ones to your own AI agent. The AI agent sorts them and gives you a totals spreadsheet, and that spreadsheet is what you drop onto the tax estimate page.

Don't take our word for it. Check the file.

The Scrubber is one file. Everything it does is written inside it, in code anyone can read, and there is no server behind it. Three ways to check before you trust it with a statement:

1. Turn your internet off and use it

Open the file, switch off Wi-Fi, then drop a file in. It works exactly the same, because nothing is sent anywhere.

2. Ask AI to read the code in The Scrubber file

Attach the downloaded file to your AI agent, whichever one you trust, and ask:

Transparently, you will see it contains a PDF reader (PDF.js, from Mozilla) so it can read statements without the internet.

3. Watch it for yourself

With the file open in Chrome, press F12, open the Network tab, then drop a file in. You will see no request leave your computer.
